DESIGN INSPIRATION: Foal At Dawn Gate
Dropping a sibling at an Australian boarding school, I waited by the paddock gate at sunrise. A chestnut foal trotted up, ears swivelling at a kookaburra laugh, one front hoof half-lifted mid-curiosity. That pause—neither run nor rest—was exactly how a student feels on day one: ready, unsure, alive. I sketched the outline on the bus ticket home. The pendant keeps that gate-morning posture: not a racehorse, just a young thing meeting the world.
THE STORY: Silver Brumby
Australian bush legend tells of the brumby—wild horses descended from lost colonial herds, running free where the land forgets fences. Elders say a brumby foal seen at dusk grants the watcher one year of unbroken courage. A girl from a wheat-belt town boarded in Sydney, homesick every winter. Her dorm mate, a coast kid who’d never ridden, saved weeks of café shifts to buy a tiny silver pony—not a branded horse, a foal with ears up. She pinned it to the homesick girl’s uniform lapel string. “Now your brumby follows you to maths,” she said. Years later both women teach in different cities; the pony moved from lapel to necklace chain. No engraving, no date.
